Context
This is one of my signature styles. I developed this style for mostly portraits but also whole characters sometimes. It’s versatile, I can adapt it to any looks, races, genders, ages or specific features. And of course it’s spooky cute which is something I love!
Inspiration
I’m not even gonna hide or pretend that I’m not heavily influenced by Tim Burton’s characters. I adore them since I remember. Maybe he’s even the source of my love for everything spooky? Who knows… I also wanted to incorporate the look of children’s books illustration style. I mean the textured but simple ones, not super literal and not so very digitally rendered looking.
Process
I knew I wanted big big eyes and not realistic proportions. At first I wanted to have those Disney princess eyes with giant pupils but they were not giving the spooky vibe that was crucial for me. So instead I decided on tiny pupils and no irises, very Tim Burton thing. I combined it with sort of childish face shape and that’s when my signature spooky faces were born.
I sometimes draw from reference (for commissions of course or “draw this in your style” challenges), and sometimes straight from my head or memory.
